AZ Imagery Service upgrade

Fyi, for anyone that uses the AZ Imagery Server, this just in from Jana Hutchins.

The AZ Imagery Server service has been updated and is now available via
an ArcGIS Server connection in place of the former ArcIMS connection.
The new service should be considerably faster and is made available with
updated streets, city boundaries, and ownership vector files.

THE NEW SERVICE WILL BE AVAILABLE THE MORNING OF THURSDAY SEPTEMBER
10TH.

I (I am Mark Manone) have taken a Faculty position with the Department of Geography, Public Planning and Recreation. Needless to say, I will still be around the GRAIL. If needed, you can find me at the GRAIL on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

This is an exciting new position as I hope to continue GeoEvanagelize to a broader congregation!

The presentation and hands on demonstration we were given was very instructive and an eye opener.

It touched on things that are useful in the modern day GIS industry. I particularly liked the presentation on the merging of technologies, Google Earth and ArcGIS, and how they can be used to generate customized GIS maps.

Just a heads up. Abstracts are due on Friday, Nov. 14 for ESRI UC in San Diego. This year the conference is a month earlier, July 13-17. We will be hosting an entire session on Field Based Mapping Teaching Techniques in Higher Ed. at the conference this year!

Ghost Image for Lab Machines

The new lab machine image is almost finished. If you have any last minute programs you would like to have loaded let me know. Also, ALL LOCAL DATA STORED ON THE MACHINES WILL BE WIPED OUT!!!!! Make sure you have a backup of anything that is stored locally on the machines!

The lab computers will also be running ArcGIS 9.3 and ENVI 4.5.

We have developed 5 basic level workshops that will be offered each week throughout November and December. They are posted on the eLearning training website.

Phone jacks installed

The phone jacks in the computer lab have been installed. As mentioned there is one for analog phones (polycom conference) and for digital (standard speaker phone). They have been activated for long distance as well. The jacks are labeled with the phone number for each.

I have put in a request to have two phone lines activated in the GRAIL training room.

Hopefully this will alleviate any further issues involving calling into webinars in the lab

One jack will be analog to accommodate a polycom conference phone, the other will be digital if you want to use a typical speakerphone.

The two jacks will be located in the floor panel at the center/far back side of the room.

I will let you know when this becomes active.

There will be electrical work in the computer lab sometime Monday or Tuesday (Oct 27-Oct28). If you to work in there, it would probably be best to pick a computer in the front two rows. They will be installing outlets for the ceiling projectors!

Re-imaging the computers in the lab

We will be re-imaging the computer lab next week. That means that all “local” data will be wiped out. If you have meaningful data sitting on the machines in the lab, please wipe it out early next week.This also means that we need your input as to what software should be loaded on the machines. If you have any special requests or pet software, please let me or Paul know. For those of you that have the lab scheduled for next week, please rest easy and know that the imaging will take place well before or after you are scheduled to use it.

This is a first installment of an attempt to keep folks that work at the GRAIL facility informed as to the happenings in the GRAIL computer room.

I am going to make a significant attempt to try and pump out at least one post per week

Eventually, I would like to make this a venue to introduce new ideas, software, data, etc. .....lets just see how it goes
